How to Prevent Elder Fraud - Lunch & Learn

Thank you to Pam Sargent and Kristin La Forest of Community Financial Credit Union for speaking on How to prevent Elder Fraud as part of December Lunch & Learn.

Elder fraud is on the rise and has resulted in over a billion dollars in losses in 2021. The attendees learned about scams targeting older adults, what to do if you are a victim of fraud, and how best to protect yourself and your loved ones.

The event took place at the Canton Township administration building on 12-14-22, 11:30-1:00 pm.

Winter Social Update

On November 30th, 41 Giving Hope ladies came out for the long-awaited return of our Dixboro General Store Christmas shopping event. Brenda, owner of Dixboro General Store, and her crew did an amazing job making the store look like a Christmas wonderland! They were very generous with their time in assisting our guests with their shopping ... and our ladies know how to shop! We spent $4000 (and that's after the 20% off Brenda gave our guests).

As we shopped, sipped and socialized, we supported The Rainbow Connection through our Pass the Purse. Our in-person collection totaled $550 and another $1100 was collected through on-line donations. The Rainbow Collection's mission is to make wishes come true for Michigan children with life-threatening medical conditions. They also provide support services to eligible "wish" families in need.

As always, thank you to all of our volunteers - Karen Hanchett, Jackie Jossey, Becky Hurst, Dianne Neihengen, Dian Slavens and Debbie Maloni - for helping with set up, clean up and serving cookies and wine. Also, thank you to Sharon Filips, Denise Murray and Maureen Visser for greeting our guests at the sign-in table.

Next Special Event

Our next special event is tentatively set for Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at the Village Arts Factory. We are planning to support MOD Market. They may even set up a pop-up shop for our guests to purchase handmade items.

Preventing Elder Fraud

Statistics show that an increasing number of people, in general, are falling victim to scams. Part of the problem is that scammers are highly adaptable and can mimic legitimate communications from romantic partners, tech support staff, and government employees. One group particularly affected by this issue is the elderly. Those homeowners with healthy financial savings, good credit scores, and a trusting nature often prove to be attractive targets for scammers.

Elder fraud is on the rise and has resulted in over a billion dollars in losses in 2021. Learn about scams targeting older adults, what to do if you are a victim of fraud, and how best to protect yourself and your loved ones.

About Our Speakers:

Pam Sargent has been with Community Financial Credit Union for 7 years and currently works as a Fraud Investigator. She started her career as a teller, working the front line at the Plymouth branch. She quickly became interested with the fraud part of the business and worked her way to her current position by mentoring in the department. Pam's passion is to assist members who have been victims of fraud and to provide education in this area.

Kristen LaForest is the Community Outreach & Engagement Coordinator for Community Financial Credit Union. Kristen travels around the state providing educational programs in the schools and communities that CFCU serves.

Giving Hope - Fall Business Meeting Update

Fall Annual Business Meeting Event October 12th

Giving Hope, Women’s Giving Circle enjoyed Our Fall Annual Meeting at Rocky’s of Northville. Members were given the updated Operating Guidelines of Giving Hope, Women’s Giving Circle, along with a reminder that annual dues of $125 are now due.

The Emergency Granting Fund was introduced. Emergency fund requests are vetted by CCF/LIA and approved by the Advisory Board to ensure donations will be used appropriately for true needs.

Members were asked to consider serving on our Advisory Board which meets 4-6 times a year. This is an opportunity to be more involved and collaborate with some talented ladies while providing support to local women, children and families in our community.

New Members

Giving Hope extends a very warm welcome to 5 new members: Penny Irwin, Jackie Jossey, Christine Schingeck, Mary Miller and Sue Smith. Our membership has grown to 64; and this, in turn gives us an even greater opportunity to help those in need!

Annual Meeting Recap

Along with our annual business meeting, ladies enjoyed socializing, a delicious plated dinner and learned about the Lead #Like A Girl program which has been empowering young ladies in our community for success for the past 7 years. The program’s director, Laura Mortier, gave a brief presentation overview of the program. Recent program graduates Sunhani Manosh and Natalie Richardson spoke about their personal experience with Lead #Like A Girl. $841 was raised in Pass the Purse and online donations, which will be applied towards the Lead #Like@Girl college scholarship fund awarded annually at their May graduation celebration. Giving Hope members will be invited to attend the ceremony.

Another treat of the evening was seeing some of our recent granting funds in action. Giving Hope member Christina Bair brought a variety of sample soaps from MOD Market. MOD Market recently received a grant from Giving Hope to support this new soap making program for the participants at Living and Learning Enrichment Center. The soaps will be sold at MOD Market in downtown Northville.

Special thank you to Karen Hanchett for suggesting and coordinating our efforts to support Lead # Like A Girl program and Becky Hurst, who helped clean up after our vent.

Dixboro General Store Christmas Shopping Event

Our next special event will be The Dixboro General Store Christmas shopping event on Wednesday, November 30^th 7-9 pm. Invite your lady friends to come shop at 20% off items! Our Pass the Purse will go to support The Rainbow Connection. Their mission is to make wishes come true for Michigan children with life-threatening medical conditions. The Pass the Purse collection will focus on gift cards that the Rainbow Connection can give to wish families.

Long Covid

Lunch & Learn - Surviving Long Covid

Most People with Covid-19 won't become severely ill and will often recover within weeks of illness. But even a mild infection can cause long Covid. And with the high transmissibility of certain variants - which often results in milder disease outcomes - many people may be concerned about developing long Covid.

Long Covid - or post Covid conditions - is a wide range of new, returning or on going health problems people may experience more than four weeks after being first infected. Even, people who did not have any symptoms can experience long Covid, which can present as different types and combinations of health problem and can range in lengths of time, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Stephen Bloom, Medical Director of Rehabilitation at St.Josephs Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, will join us to talk about the symptoms of long Covid and living with the long-term effects. Time will be reserved to answer specific questions.

In an age of misinformation and information overload, how do we sort fact from fiction and reputable sources from those less reliable? Keen critical thinking skills can help to filter through the noise to get to the truth.

Jo Angela is a former high school and middle school teacher who now, as a Learning Librarian at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, helps college students find information on a wide range of topics. She is currently an adjunct lecturer for U/M's School of Information and College of Literature, Science and Arts; and is teaching a class entitled, "Fake News, Lies, and Propaganda: How to Sort Fact From Fiction."

Lunch & Learn Veterans Healthcare Update

2nd season of Lunch and Learn series hosted by Local Impact Alliance launched today at the Canton Township Building 1st floor Board room.

The topic "Veterans Healthcare Update" was very well received. It was in partnership with Legal Help For Veterans, PLLC

Speakers Deanne Bonner Simpson Esq. & Brigadier General Carol Ann Fausone (retired) presented new information on Burn Pit Exposure & other new presumptive conditions.

Veterans and their family members from the Local Community were able to ask questions.
