FIREARM SAFETY

Developing Solutions for a Growing Public Health Crisis

Firearm injury and death has become a persistent public health crisis in the United States. Firearms are the leading cause of death among U.S. children and teens; and each day more than 120 people in the United States are killed by firearms. In 2020 alone more than 45,000 people died from firearm-related injuries.

As firearm injury rates continue to increase, there is a great need for data-driven solutions. The University of Michigan has taken the lead in this effort launching the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention in 2021. Their goal is to generate new knowledge and advance innovative solutions that reduce firearm injury.

In this Lunch and Learn, Dr. Laura Seewald from the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention will speak on the magnitude of the firearm injury problem and offer a framework for developing solutions and reducing injury, all while respecting the rights of responsible, law-abiding firearm owners. The focus is not on gun control, but rather on injury prevention.

About our Speaker

Dr. Laura Seewald is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and a Research Assistant Professor with the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention at the University of Michigan. She is also an adult emergency medicine physician at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan.

Her research on firearm injury prevention is focused on the development, testing, and implementation of emergency department-based interventions to decrease firearm violence, youth violence, intimate partner violence, and associated risk behaviors.

David Hammond, Founder & Executive Director of Creating Habitats gave a very informative talk on Creating your own Pollinators Garden - a Lunch & Learn event hosted by Local Impact Alliance.

Dave is on the board of Canton Community Foundation and has done extensive planting of Native gardens in Plymouth, Canton, Northville in MI and VT, NH, KY, NY, MA and RI.

In 2022 he founded Creating Habitats for Pollinators, a nonprofit whose goal is to increase habitats for pollinating insects and animals by planting native wildflowers.

14th Annual summit - Lunch & Learn

The 3rd year of Lunch & Learn series hosted by Local Impact Alliance started with the Veteran's Summit

.

It was the 14th Annual summit organized in partnership with Legal Help For Veterans, PLLC.

The topic was "PACT Act and How Will It Affect My VA Benefits and Care?

Speakers Brigadier General Carol Ann Fausone (retired) and Kristina L Derro, Esq presented new information on PACT Act.

Veterans and their family members from the Local Community were able to ask questions and discuss over important topic over lunch, sponsored by Glen Shaw Jr. Family Foundation.

We, at Local Impact Alliance, along with affiliated members are forever grateful for your service.

Veteran Andrew Paris brought the model of the ships which were on display at the event.

Brigadier General Carol Ann Fausone (Retd)

General Fausone has been a nurse for over 40 years. She served her country for 36 years and retired in 2011. She now owns The Veterans Advocate, LLC that consults for businesses in matters related to VA health care, education and programs. She was approved in 2016 as a Service Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business. She also helps direct individual veterans to resources and benefits. She works part-time at Legal Help for Veterans as its chief-fix-it officer on VA road blocks.

Kristina Derro Veterans Legal Expert

Kristina L. Derro is a graduate of Wayne State University Law School and has both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of Michigan. She has spent the past 18 years representing veterans on behalf of Legal Help for Veterans, PLLC before the VA and the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans’ Claims.

Join the conversation Wednesday, May 17th to learn about all the opportunities offered through the Plymouth Canton Community Literacy Council.

Whether it’s one-on-one tutoring, conversation groups, or English language learner book clubs, the Literacy Council is available to help you gain confidence in reading, writing and speaking English.

Speakers:

Andrea Hug became the Executive Director of the Community Literacy Council in 2017. She received her B.A. from Albion College in Economics and Communications and her M.A. from EMU in Education. She taught at Livonia Public Schools and substitute taught at P-CCS. She served on the board of P-CCS Parent Council for four years. When Andrea is not helping English language learners with their conversational English language goals, she enjoys volunteering at the Humane Society of Huron Valley.

Joyce Silagy has over 30 years of experience as a teacher. Her experience with Dearborn Public Schools was primarily in adult education where she taught business classes. Joyce served as

Community Education Manager and Supervisor of Career and Technical Education for Southfield Public Schools. In 2006, Joyce became a volunteer tutor for the Plymouth Canton Literacy Council; and in 2011 helped create the ESL outreach program for Connection Church where she teaches students and facilitates tutors.

March Lunch & Learn - Healthy Yard Maintenance Tips to Protect Your Watershed with Annette DeMaria, P.E. PMP

As part of the Local Impact Alliance's monthly Lunch and Learn Series, Annette DeMaria, Executive Director of the Alliance of Rouge Communities, provided advice and tips on creating a beautiful yard while protecting the Rouge River Watershed. Suggestions for fertilizer/pesticide use, mowing strategies, animal waste, and household chemical use were all discussed.

Annette graciously provided us with her slide deck to refer to back to as we work toward improving our watershed. She included her full deck, which is more information than she was able to cover during our session.

April Lunch & Learn: Helping Young Adults With Disabilities Live Their Best Life featuring Living & Learning Enrichment Center

Did You Know:

• Approximately 1 in 44 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD)?

• At least 85% of autistic adults are unemployed and have a college education?

• There is an organization in our community that’s working to place these talented workers in local businesses that are struggling with staffing issues?

Living and Learning Enrichment Center (LLEC) reflects the vision and energy of its founder Rachelle Vartanian. Rachelle has earned two master’s degrees in Educational Psychology and Autism Spectrum Disorders. The second master’s degree came as a direct result of the most important letters ever added to Rachelle’s name: M.O.M. Her youngest son was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at five years old (17 years ago). Determined to fill in the multitude of blanks about what could be done for those with autism, Rachelle went back to school to learn all she could about ASD. In response to the lack of affordable, accessible support groups for herself and her son, Rachelle started a free weekly social skills program in the Farmington Community Library. The overwhelming and positive results led her to quit her 20-year career as a special education teacher, sell her home, downsize her possessions, borrow from her retirement account, and open the Living and Learning Enrichment Center in downtown Northville. Living and Learning Enrichment Center has become a beacon for parents and clients with autism and related conditions. Flash forward 8 years and LLEC is providing the services and skills/vocational training she saw an urgent need for while her son was growing up. Rachelle and the dedicated staff at LLEC are helping members and their parents achieve the hopes and dreams all parents have for their children.

Our Panel

Rachelle Vartanian is the Founder and Executive Director of the Living and Learning Enrichment Center. She has always refused to accept the status quo and has made a career of constantly advocating for and improving the quality of life for people with disabilities. Her mission is for LLEC to be the nation’s model for providing quality services and improving the quality of life for people with disabilities. It is this drive that has caused LLEC to be one of the fastest growing companies in the state of Michigan.

Ethan Erlandson oversees LLEC’s Job Development Program to help adults with disabilities find gainful employment. This program assists individuals with job readiness training including soft skills, career/job exploration, resume' writing, application training, interview preparation, and professional communication. Communication is continuous between our coordinator, coaches, employer, and family to ensure that employment is being maintained and successful.

David Franco oversees the Exceptional Academy, an advanced work skills training program for adults with disabilities that currently provides Cisco IT networking certification training with a focus in Cybersecurity. The Academy (the only one of its kind in Michigan) is one of many programs offered by the Living and Learning Enrichment Center. David uses his experience from 20 years of technology sales to successfully recruit students, sponsors and strategic partners.
